Utilitarianism
Utilitarianism is a universal teleological system. It calls for the greatest good for the greatest number. In other words, whatever is beneficial to the greatest number of people is considered to be good, whilst whatever is beneficial to the least number of people is considered to least good.
From this ethical stance, surrogacy can be perceived as morally right - the intended parents receive a much desired child. In the case of commercial surrogacy, the surrogate mother is happily rewarded with a payment, and in altruistic surrogacy, the surrogate (who is acting voluntarily) gives the "greatest" gift of new life.
If a surrogacy is to unfold smoothly, then from a utilitarian stance, it is good; as the greatest number of people are happy. Even in the application of the Baby M case, surrogacy would still be considered as ethical, seeing as both Stern parents were happy, versus Mary Beth sole unhappiness.
