Altruistic Surrogacy Case
Queensland mother Amanda and husband Luke are proud of their baby boy Liam Cooper Veitch, who was born through altruistic surrogacy.
When Amanda was diagnosed with cervical cancer, resulting in the removal of her reproductive organs (with the exception of her ovaries), her dreams of becoming a mother seemed doubtful. However, Amanda was aware of the battle to legalise altruistic surrogacy in Queensland.
After months of chemotherapy and waiting, The Bligh Government released a media statement announcing altruistic surrogacy would be decriminalised in Queensland. Luckily for Amanda, her sister, Lisa, was interested in helping the hopeful couple become new parents.
“I remember having the discussion with Lisa, and she’d said that she would carry our baby for us, but we had to do it then, so she had the opportunity to have more children of her own,” Amanda said. Although the surrogacy meant expensive treatments, the attending of multiple seminars and judgment for their use of altruistic surrogacy, the intended parents were finally blessed with a baby boy.
No one would classify the surrogacy as a straightforward process – there was plenty of cost, emotion and stress involved – but the result has been more than worth it. Liam is the result of a resolute love and friendship between two sisters – and perhaps the most treasured gift a sister could give.
